Once again, Mother Nature wasn't cooperating. Evil or Very Mad Several members made it out to Impact Zone, but rain the night before coupled with the threat of additional rain that morning, pushed us indoors once again. I made a quick call to Matt at Memorial Oaks range, and he agreed to come in early to open his range to us. Many thanks to Matt for his generosity!!

The last minute change of venue caused us to get a late start, but we managed to get in 3 short scenarios and another combat duel. Despite the nasty weather, we had 22 shooters show up. Five of those were first-timers.

L--->R Snake Fart, Red Raider, Jason, uk_pony, Mitz, jmf, mycroft007, PPM, Dennis Sr., Jacob Staff, Heisman, Acain1, humblebyday, bmc350, noobshooter, jst0024, Miguel, Gooner81, Lumberjack98, dejadoo, XD_Dan

CoF 1 Zebra Drill
Course Instructions: Start with hand naturally at side. At the start signal, draw and engage T1- T3 (in order) with two rounds each.

CoF 2 Tap em Twice
Course Instructions: Starting in the surrender position, back to the targets. At the start signal, turn, draw, and engage T1-T3, in any order, with 2 rounds each. Reload from slide lock and reengage T1-T3.

CoF 3 5+1
Course Instructions: At the start signal, draw and engage T1 with 5 to COM and one to the head.

Totals

Congratulations to jst0024!!
Jeremy also had the lowest total points down for the match at 6.
First-timer, mycroft007 (Ron), also shot very well. Ron came in fourth on total points down with only 11.
Nice shooting, gentlemen!

*Combat Duel*
Course Instructions: Two shooters will be lined up, side by side, at 10 paces from their adversary target. At the start signal, engage and defeat your adversary by popping the balloon. First to pop wins…loser shoots no more. The balloons are 7" diameter and placed in a cut-out target in CoM. Both shooters will start with only one round loaded. If both shooters miss the balloon, they must reload and re-engage.

For the Combat Duel, we separated shooters into two classes....novice and advanced. The novice class win went to guest and first-timer, Jason. Very Happy
The advanced class winner was Space Ghost.
Joe (Space Ghost) went on to become the "last man standing". Congrats Joe!!
On a personal note, I did very well at last month's Combat Duel. I went into the February duel feeling pretty confident that I would do well again. I was defeated in the first round by PPM...a retired teacher and grandmother!! Embarassed

I would like to thank everyone who attended. All in all, I think we managed to scrape together a respectable match. I don't know if all of you realize it, but our very first gathering of this group was 2 years ago on Febraury 26, 2005. Back then, we only had 16 total members. Only four of us attended that first gathering. We have certainly come a long way since then. Cool

That was a great meet!! Congratulations to our fearless leaders for excuting a plan "b" so well and in such short notice!!!

Although my scores don't reflect it, my new grip style (a poor but improving imitation of the Brian Enos Grip) sure made feel like I was doing better. So did my new high tech rear sights, which are actualy red sharpied back dots, so they won't stand out as much and let me focus more on the white front sight. Now if I see the canadian flag, shoot!

My thanks to the organizers and attendee's alike. I had a lot of fun.

Being able to draw from a holster, change mag's under pressure, whilst meeting some really cool people was a joy.
I held a gun for the first time just 2 months ago; yet I learned more in a morning with you guys than I did in both those months firing blindly at my local range.
I put everything I picked up in to practise at the range today, my grip has improved, I'm more confident with the gun, and I'm starting to get better.
Learning gun control, and improving your skills whilst having fun is a great idea.

A great time had!

If anyone is up to the challenge I'd appreciate a left to right of either usernames or first names. I'm useless with names.

ditto.

Although I bought my gun almost a year ago, other than a couple of really basic courses I took last sumer, I realy began to learn how to shoot when I came to my first meet in December. The first thing I learned, is how much I needed to learn. I didn't realize how bad I was until I did my first match, but now I really feel like I'm making improvements, and although I have a long ways to go, I have a decent idea of what goals to aim for.

The best thing for us noobs is having a dozen or so experienced eyes looking at us, spotting our goofs, and giving us immediate feedback on them. Last time I learned not to expose my pistol past cover, and that I was jerking so much I couldn't take a head shot, leading to the demise of a hostage. This time I learned that I was unconciously doing dangerous things with my RH fingers while hitting the mag release button, so my homework will be to pratice reloading while keeping a proper grip.

Special thanks for Matt for letting us in at Memorial Oaks. It know it would have been a double bummer for dejadoo after driving in all the way from Austin, and also for uk_pony coming in from Bryan. Glad you guys were able to make it out.

Congrats to all of the new shooters. You guys did well for the first time out. Hopefully next month we can shoot at the Impact Zone and go through a proper full new shooter orientation. I know we didn't get a chance to cover alot of movement drills or weak hand shooting. I'm sure Semmie will have some stuff that Glen or I didn't cover in our abbreviated orientation.

Good job everybody.

Exactly what you 2 said. It was my 2nd meet. I've only been shooting pistols since Jan. 14th, 07. This group is great about giving tips, posting links to videos and even giving positive feedback when they see me using the tips they gave me. I also feel like I'm improving, but realize that I need to slow down a little to improve my accuracy to reduce the number of points down I scored. Please don't hold back on the criticism, I have thick skin and its how I get better.

Thanks again for a great meet, I'll be practicing and looking forward to next month with GREAT WEATHER and seeing you all again...

Even after driving all over creation I really enjoyed myself. Thanks Dan and gang on making this happen, I look forward to doing it again.

First-timer, mycroft007 (Ron), also shot very well. Ron came in fourth on total points down with only 11.

This just goes to show I have NO idea how scoring worked. :) I thought I hadn't done all that well. Some of you guys were so much faster and more accurate, I can't understand how I could have finished 4th.

Yeah, thanks for making us drive all over Dan. Wink

I had a great time and realized that I don't do very well if I only come to every other meet.

I also can't believe that I missed the balloon. Dangit!

I really enjoyed lunch with Heisman, Jacob Staff, UK_Pony, XD_Dan, PPM, Mitz, humblebyday and Spaceghost. I was reminded why I don't normally go there. Too much money for what you get. However the company was great and we all got to listen to Jacob Staff get up on one of his many soapboxes. Wink

My favorite part was the cracked windshield that I received on my way home. Evil or Very Mad Good times!!

Thanks everyone for coming out and making this another safe and fun event!!

Your speed will increase in time. Don't sweat it.

You did exactly what I hope all first-timers will do. You paid attention to safety, technique, and shot placement.....not speed. A slow hit is always better than a fast miss. Too often, people (read: all of us) get all caught up in the fact that these scenarios are timed. We worry too much about beating the clock and our shot placement suffers.....a lot.
There have been times after a "speed drill" that I realized, after I was done shooting, that I never really got a good look at my front sight. Raw time is fast, but total time (with points down) is not so good.

Ron, thanks for making the match. (Believe me, we don't usually drive to two different ranges for one match! shocked ) If you wanna save some gas money next month, you can ride in with me. I used to ride in with Glen when he lived in Spring.

Umm, Tony, do you remember a good looking bald guy sitting at your table? He was a fellow officer, and charter member of the club... Umm, that was me... Thanks for making me feel so special. Wink

Gabe, thanx for pointing out my errant fingers during mag changes. I knew iI was strugling with the gun, but not what my fingers were doing.

While my index was soo focused staying out of the trigger guard, it almost made it into the chamber, and the big dumb middle sure was making a beeline for the trigger guard. I was clueless until Gabe pointed it out.

got to relate a funny aside to all you folks who made it to Memeorial Oaks. I went out to just watch this month since I knew I was going to get a late start. Got out to IZ about 9:45 or so and all I heard was silence. Knew something was probably wrong. Weather by then was nice but breezy. I ended up talking with Phil out there for about 2 1/2 hours. So it was an interesting morning. Hopefully will be able to shoot next month.

I'll bet he spent about an hour calling us all pansies for moving the match indoors. Laughing

I used a slightly different word that started with a 'P' when I was out there at 8:45. But.. Dan did try to call me in all fairness. (Reminder to self.. send cell number to Dan)

Here is the irony..

I suspect you decided not to shoot at Impact Zone because it would be wet and you didn't want anyone to slip.... well, when we were at the indoor range, we shot all the courses flat footed without moving. Very Happy

I've shot many matches in the rain.. yes, you have to be careful about your footing.. but it adds an element (no pun intended) to shooting that is useful. Once I shot a 'big' match at American and we were standing in 4" of water, you did tactical mag changes because you didn't want to lose your mag.

Anyway, I had a nice drive, a fun shoot, and a good lunch.. overall a very nice day.

Thanks again to everyone that helps put on the match!

Thanks Tony, I feel so much better now. Mr. Green

I can't wait to get out to IZ next month. With Spring coming, the weather should be great for the next few matches.
